Lynn, Lynn, Come on in…

Posted on June 14, 2009

Saturday, a group of us tossed around some ideas for a new slogan for Lynn. The first one thrown out was

    Lynn, Lynn, come on in.
    The water’s fine…

Then we were at a loss. “…Ignore the din …have some gin …let the good times begin?”

Later on I came up with this little gem:

Lynn, Lynn, city by the beach,
    Bring your pitbull
    But keep it on leash.

The day did not go as planned. For one thing, I locked myself out of the house. In my wanderings, I saw a candidate for City Councillor-at-Large, and he gave me this flyer:

“Lynn, Lynn, Together We Win.” Brilliant! Why didn’t we think of that?

I’m sure there are other possibilities for slogans that capture the special character and qualities of Lynn. Will they ever replace the classic one? Probably not, but — and some of you may disagree — doesn’t sin make life a little more interesting and fun?  As H. L. Mencken said, “Puritanism. The haunting fear that someone, somewhere, may be happy.”

In the interest of fairness to a more religious point of view, there is the slogan found on the Salvation Army church in downtown Lynn: “Lynn, Lynn, City of Him.”

Now it’s your turn. Come up with your own slogan for the city of Lynn. It doesn’t have to follow the what I call “classic” format. You could say something about downtown, High Rock, Lynn’s beaches, anything about Lynn. Be creative!

(This is not an endorsement. Any other candidate is welcome to mail me their campaign information, and I will post it.)
