If you host it, they will come. All 4 incumbents and new candidate Eugene Schneeburg were more than eager to share their visions of a revitalized Lynn. More than 50 people were eager to hear them. What I kept hearing was that they wished there were more events like this. I agree. It takes more than elected officials to run a city. It also takes active participation from voters.

Yours truly moderated the discussion, not with an iron fist perhaps, but everyone respected the time limits more or less and no one hogged the floor. Next time, I’ll bring a stopwatch. East Lynn Community Association President Mary Trahan graciously ceded 10 minutes of her time to allow the proceeding to continue into the 2nd part of the meeting. One hour was not enough.

I am sorry to report we were not able to record the proceedings. However, you can view city council and other public meetings on the Living in Lynn blog. And you can speak to the councillors directly; their phone numbers are published on the city’s website.

Everything from absentee landlords to development in downtown and the waterfront was discussed. Rather than report who said what, I invite the people who were there to offer their thoughts, comments and observations. The ECLA’s next forum will be in September and will feature the mayoral candidates.

Finally, I would like to thank everyone who attended last night, from the spectators to the at-large councillors. The people who choose public service as a career are too often unfairly vilified, yet there are a good many that work for and deserve our trust.
