Walking down Williams Avenue this morning, I saw 3 young adults hanging out in Williams Avenue Park talking. In the past I would have kept on walking, but I knew about the Park and Recreation Department’s summer program there for children ages 6 and up. Sure enough, when I talked to the two young men and one woman, I learned that they were park instructors paid for with funds from the Mayor’s summer jobs program to staff this special program.

The instructors will be at the park from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM Monday through Thursday and on Fridays from 9:00 AM to 2:00 PM until August 6. So what are you waiting for? Boot the kids out of the house and take advantage of this wonderful program! Activities include special events, wiffleball games, arts & crafts, sports, entertainment, field trips and fun for all ages. (there will be a fee for some of the activities) Lunch will be provided during park hours.

Just last weekend, PlaySafe Lynn and the city sponsored a cleanup of Williams Avenue Park. All the brush and trash are gone and the playground equipment and benches have been given a fresh coat of paint. According to eyewitness accounts, about 60 volunteers helped out. Ward Councillor Darren Cyr there, and DPW Commissioner Jay Fink made an appearance. Once again, residents have spurred the city to put money and resources toward fixing up and staffing a neglected park.

So get out there and use it! Let’s keep the ball rolling! The city is offering you something. Take it!
